How to calculate bitrates for DVD production

March 29, 2010
Posted in Uncategorized — Written by kate

The DVD disks you can record on with computers have an advertised size of 4.7GB (gigabytes) but in fact they only hold 4.37GB of data. When creating these it’s important to make sure that all of your video, audio and menus will fit in that space and the best way to do that is with a bitrate calculator.
While a calculator will show you the maximum bitrate you should use, it’s often best to use a lower bitrate and generally-speaking, when recording to DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW you should keep the video bitrate below 7Mbps even if the calculator shows that you can use a higher rate. Some experts on DVD production even suggest keeping the maximum MPEG-2 bitrate at 6Mbps. For best results you should also use compressed audio instead of uncompressed “PCM” audio.
There are two good reasons to keep your video bitrate as low as possible:
A lower rate allows you to get more video on a DVD, and
Perhaps, just as importantly, DVD-R General disks will be more compatible with DVD players when the video and audio bitrates are kept low. This is especially important for playing DVD’s on computers which have software MPEG2 decoders.
The calculator is set by default for putting a 90 minutes video on DVD with 224Kbps audio. In the box marked Calculated Bitrate, it shows that the 90 minutes of video would have to be encoded to MPEG2 at 6548 kilobits per second (6.5Mbps) to fit on a disc.
Clicking Advanced mode brings up a window with more options, most of which you actually don’t need to worry about. In this example, looking for the encoding bitrate for 2 hours of video. It shows that you can should encode at 4.7Mbps, which is a feasible bitrate with good MPEG encoders (with some encoders though, it will result in lousy quality). Notice that the “audio bitrate” is now set for for 128Kbps (kbits/s). By lowering the audio bitrate you are able to use a higher video bitrate. If you use uncompressed audio, it has a bitrate of 1536Kbps and instead of being able to encode the video at 4.5Mbps, you’d have to encode it at only 3.2Mbps.
There’s also a place in the Advanced mode view to type in the size of the overhead files (Other ISO files). For DVD’s this should be equal to somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of disk size (the higher figure for lots of complex menus, multi-angle,etc.) - at 5% that means about 219MB. If you have a lot of menus and chapters it will reduce the amount of video you can put on the disk without having to lower the video bitrate. So if it’s your intent to put over 90 minutes on a DVD, try to keep the menus simple.
You also need to keep in mind that your dvd duplication copies can only be as good as the master disc you supply to the DVD duplication company. Therefore make sure you are happy with the master you send for them to copy from.

DVD Authoring

March 22, 2010
Posted in Uncategorized — Written by kate

This is the process of creating a DVD video capable of playing on a  player.  Authoring software must conform to the specifications set by the  Forum group in 1995. The complexity of these specifications results from the number of companies that were involved in creating them.
Strictly speaking, DVD authoring differs from the process of MPEG encoding, but as of 2009 most  authoring software has a built-in encoder (though separate encoders are still used when better quality or finer control over compression settings is required).
Most DVD-authoring applications focus exclusively on video DVDs and do not support the authoring of DVD-Audio discs.
Stand-alone DVD recorder units generally have basic authoring functions, though the creator of the disc has little or no control over the layout of the  menus, which generally differ between models and brands.
To develop a DVD application (software or hardware), one must first licence the particular book of  specifications from DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation, a Japanese corporation. The different  formats have different books; each book contains hundreds of pages. After obtaining this licence, the developer must become a licensee — which requires an additional fee. Without becoming a licensee, the book can be used only for reference, not for actual creation of DVD applications.
The DVD specifications were written in Japanese and then translated to English for use in America. This process has resulted in text that can be difficult to interpret, and to this day, many companies interpret various parts of the specifications in different ways. This is the reason DVD players from different manufacturers do not always conform to the same rules – each developer understands the specifications in a slightly different way.
Once you have completed this process you can use the disc for dvd duplication/ dvd replication. Most  players will play duplication discs. 99% of  players will play replication  discs.

Creating a DVD from Files

March 12, 2010

The process of converting video footage to a DVD-video disk playable in any standard DVD player involves several steps. The first of these steps, digitizing the video, After converting your footage from analogue to digital, you must convert it again to MPEG-2 format (unless this was done as part of the first step), then separate the video and audio streams into distinct files, then transform these files into the .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files that your DVD player understands, then finally burn the files onto a DVD disk.
Fortunately, many DVD authoring programs are available that can perform every one of these steps within the same interface, making the procedure novice-friendly.
What you will need:
1. A DVD burner and blank DVD disks (any format except DVD-RAM)
2. A DVD authoring and editing program such as: Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3, InterVideo WinDVD Creator or IfoEdit (with AVI2MPG2 and TMPGEnc)
3. A CD/DVD creation program such as Nero 5.5+ or Roxio Easy CD and DVD creator (only needed if you plan to use the free DVD creation method outlined below. All the commercial DVD authoring programs we cover here include DVD burning as part of the package).
The above list of programs are the ones used for the purposes of this article. There are many other excellent DVD-authoring software packages available, so if you already have a different one included with your DVD recorder, use that instead. Chances are it will work in a similar way.
Note that all of the above packages except for the combination of IfoEdit, AVI2MPEG2 and TMPGEnc are commercial products. They both have a brief trial period in which you can test them out, however. There are sadly few freeware solutions available.
Once you have created your dvd, you can use it for dvd duplication / dvd replication. You can also put a copy guard on the dvd, so that people can’t copy your dvd duplication/ dvd replication discs. You need to do this in the authoring process. You can have it done at a dvd replication company but you may be charged for this.

How to increase the effectiveness of Direct Mail

March 7, 2010

Making a sale depends on much more than simple brand loyalty. Marketers need to encourage more, and incentivise more. As such marketers of major brands are constantly trying to find new ways to entice customers through their glossy brochures and printed mailers.
A combination of digital and printed media can help maximise opportunities to communicate brand awareness and product content on a promotional CD or DVD. Whilst CDs and DVDs are perceived to be high-value items, they are visually appealing and cost a lot less than you may think. The perfect shape, exibility and light weight means they can be a very accessible and cost effective way of demonstrating your
brand, whether it may be it a new car launch or a video tour of the latest holiday destination.
CD’s and DVD’s really can help to bring your brand to life and deliver in depth content to your customers in a new and interesting way. You may want to add to the appeal by including a competition on the disc, perhaps after the end of playing your message you offer an opportunity to win a holiday or discount.
Create a direct link to your website; the disc can be the perfect catalyst for directing people to your full range on-line. No need to wait in the hope that customers may enter your website by chance or via one of the many search engines. The possibilities are endless, your CD or DVD can be programmed with direct links to special areas of your website, ideal for marketers who are looking to boost the interactivity with their
consumers.
Many companies are already using CD and DVD mailers, and undertaking CD replication or DVD replication but usually with traditional bulky packaging or containers made of environmentally unfriendly materials.
The Postcard disc is just one solution where you can carefully consider a balance of
economical and environmental issues in addition to finding the best ways to increase customer uptake.
With a Postcard disc the CD or DVD is much more than only a data carrier, it is the message itself.  CD replication or DVD replication is the process used to manufacture these discs with the finish being professional, and slick and will get your message across.

EcoDisc

The DVD as we know it has become the standard medium for data storage in the world’s consumer markets. Relying on its cost/capacity ratio, the standard DVD has remained largely unchanged since its invention in 1993.
While the need for cutting oil dependency, minimizing energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has reached global consensus, the standard DVD in its rigid format has very little to offer to meet these goals. On the contrary, it depends on a non-biodegradable, toxic resin to bond the two halves a DVD is constructed from.
The EcoDisc has been engineered with its impact on the environment in mind. Using today’s materials and technological processes, the EcoDisc has all the advantages of a standard DVD with the same capacity, playability, optical and electrical properties. The EcoDisc is not only thinner, lighter and more flexible than a standard DVD, it is also entirely free of toxic bonder.
The difference becomes clear when you look at the EcoDisc’s carbon footprint.
In comparison to the standard DVD the EcoDisc consists of 50% less polycarbonate, an oil derivative used as the main material to form the disc. By halving the amount of raw material, the manufacturing of the EcoDisc also needs 50% less energy in production. Taking all influencing factors into account, using EcoDisc instead of standard DVDs effectively reduces CO2 emissions by 52%.
But it is not just the carbon footprint that is smaller.
The thinner EcoDisc reduces the transport volume from factory to the consumer and thereby reducing freight cost and conserving fuel. The EcoDisc increases warehouse storage capacity and its lighter weight saves on postage. Its flexibility guarantees stronger durability when it is being handled, packaged or mailed to consumers. And ultimately when it comes to the end of its life cycle, the EcoDisc can be easily recycled thanks to the absence of any toxic bonder.
Standard cd duplication or DVD duplication packaging, can also be used for the ecodisc. The process also remains the same for the printing, as cd duplication and dvd replication which also keeps the cost down.

How to Prepare artwork for CD replication and DVD replication

March 1, 2010
Posted in CD Replication, DVD replication — Written by admin

Most CD and DVD replicators have artwork templates in Adobe Photoshop or Quark. These are the most commonly used graphics editing software available on the market. You should try to use templates supplied by the replicators because  they would have the dimensions and resolution preset for you. If you prefer to build the artwork from the scratch without using the template, remember these attributes: 300 dpi and CMYK mode. Don’t try to digitally increase the resolution by entering 300 dpi into the program unless your original artwork resolution is higher than 300 dpi. The concept is similar to buying a digital camera or camcorder. Usually the user’s manual for the digital camera or camcorder will explain the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom. Digital zoom is like making the pixels bigger than they should be. In doing so the picture looks bigger but the quality is low.

To get a true 300 dpi picture, you should get a picture with enough pixels. The dpi of the picture is not really important. You can have a 72 dpi picture but 2000 pixels across. When this picture is scaled down onto the CD artwork template, the result will be very good. On the other hand, if you have a 300 dpi picture but with only 200 pixels across, then when the picture is scaled up onto the CD artwork template, it will look blurry.

Once you have your artwork designed, you should burn it onto a blank CD and send it with your content master CDs to your replicator. . CMYK is the standard color model used in offset printing for full-color documents. Because such printing uses inks of these four basic colors, it is often called four-color printing.

In the CD Replication process and also DVD Replication process the above information is relative.

How to make a CD-ROM Autorun on a PC?

March 1, 2010
Posted in Uncategorized — Written by admin

An Autorun CD is a CD that will automatically start a program when the CD tray closes with the duplicated CD inside the tray. Autorun is a good feature for the less computer savvy users. It eliminates the steps for the user to click on “My Computer”, the CD-ROM drive, and then the program to be run. You will be surprised that many causal computer users don’t even know these few simple steps to invoke a program on a CD-ROM. An Autorun CD hides all these “complexities.”

It’s quite simple to make a CD autorun on a PC. All you need is to include a file call “autorun.inf” in the root directory of the CD-ROM. You can create the file with a simple text editor such as Notepad. If you use Notepad, make sure to quote your filename when you save the file otherwise Notepad will save the file as “autorun.inf.txt” instead of “autorun.inf”. In its simplest form the file only needs two to three lines. For example:

[autorun]
open=program_to_be_run.exe
icon=icon_to_be_shown.ico

You should replace “program_to_be_run.exe” with your own program and “icon_to_be_shown.ico” with your own icon. The requirement  for this to work is that program_to_be_run.exe must be a self-executable file. Simply put “open=index.html” trying to open up a webpage won’t work.

Autorun of a CD is now the norm. If you offer CD Duplication to your clients they will expect autorun as standard. A  CD with autorun looks more professional. Combine this with a sharp clear printed image and your next CD duplication project will be a great success. Also remember that the same applies for CD Replication,it pays to take that extra time to make your CD master autorun.
